Appendix
Part of the large intestine (Cecum) in the right-sided lower abdomen where the small intestine passes into the large intestine.
The appendix is about 1.6-3.2” (4-8cm) long, its diameter 0.2-0.3 inch (5-8mm).
It strengthens the immune system against antigenes absorbed during digestion.
Most-common affections of the appendix of the cecum:
- Acute appendicitis
Pathology:
- Pressure pain in the lower abdomen, nausea, vomiting
Diagnosis:
- Ultrasound or computertomography (CT), Laboratory
Therapy:
- Laparoscopic or conventional removal of the appendix
